WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN (1820-1891). Civil War Major General who Captured Atlanta, Commanded the March to the Sea through Georgia, and presented the City of Savannah as a “Christmas Present” to President Abraham Lincoln; Served as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Army, 1869-1884, during which time he oversaw the Indian Wars in the West.

March 21, 1875-Dated Indian Wars Period, Letter’s Autograph Endorsement Signed, "W. T. Sherman" on part of the Integral blank attached second sheet of a Letter to him measuring about 3" wide x 5.25" tall nicely written in his hand on plain wove period paper, Fine. Small fine edge tears, one measuring about 1” long into Byers last name appears easily conserved or sealed. The brown ink Signed, "W. T. Sherman" endorsement reads, in full:

"Received at St. Louis, Apl. 7, 1875 - Acknowledged - and forwarded to the Sec. of War.- (Signed) W. T. Sherman, General".

March 21st, 1875-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, "S.H.M. Byers", being the noted Poet, and Sherman's friend Samuel H. M. Byers (1838-1933), written to General Sherman, is 2 pages, measuring 5.25" x 8.25", dated at Zurich, Switzerland. A Union soldier in the 5th Iowa Infantry, Byers was taken Prisoner at Missionary Ridge, and while a Prisoner Of War held in Columbia, SC. a smuggled newspaper told the story of “Sherman's March” through Georgia to Savannah, instantly inspiring Byers to write the Poem titled, "The March to the Sea".

That historic Poem became the well-known it coined name "The March to the Sea" for Sherman's Civil War Southern military campaign. When finally freed by Sherman's Union Army after taking Columbia, Byers approached General Sherman and handed him a scrap of paper upon which the soon to become famous Poem was written. The written Poem so moved General Sherman that he appointed Byers to his Staff, and the two men became lifelong friends. Of interesting note, some years later Byers wrote, "The Song of Iowa", which was declared “Iowa's State Song” in 1911. Byers also served as American Consul to Switzerland from 1869 to 1884. Byers' Autograph Letter Signed offered here together with the attached endoresment signed by Sherman is written in purple ink and is easily readable. This Letter of longtime friendship reads, in full:

"Zurich 21 March (18)75 --- My dear General, -- I see by an item in the "New York Times", received today, that Congress has passed a bill increasing the number of Paymasters. The bill I know nothing of farther than this. --- I would still like a good position in the Pay Department, and I write this hasty note to ask, if in your opinion, I should make a formal application; or is it probable the same names will be sent to the President that were endorsed for the positions last year?

You had the very great kindness to recommend me then, and I will not ask you to trouble yourself about the matter again unless you think it for the best, and are most freely disposed to mention the matter sometime at your convenience. --- We are usually well with the exception of bad colds. My wife joins me in the warmest remembrances to yourself and family. --- Very Sincerely yours, -- (Signed) S.H.M. Byers”. -- (Addressed to:) Genl. W. T. Sherman / Army Head Quarters / St. Louis, Mo."
