Joseph Warren Revere Civil War General’s Extensive Family Related Archive of Revolutionary War Patriot Paul Revere’s Grandson and Great Grandson “Paul Revere”

JOSEPH WARREN REVERE (1812-1880). Served in both the U.S. Navy and the Army, who served with distinction as a Navy Lieutenant during the Mexican War, and as a Brigadier General during the American Civil War; he was the grandson of Paul Revere, Silversmith, Engraver, and famous Revolutionary War Patriot.

Original extensive and diverse Revere Extended Family Archive containing over 100 Documents, Letters, Photographs, etc. related to the legacy of Civil War Union General Joseph Warren Revere, the Grandson of Paul Revere, Jr. of Revolutionary War Boston historic American Patriot fame, and his son Paul Revere, containing family related material dating from the 1830's to the early 1900's, overall quality of Very Fine.

Joseph Warren Revere entered the United States Navy as a Midshipman in 1828. During the conquest of Mexican California in 1846-1847, he led the Marines and Sailors that raised the US Flag in San Francisco and Sonoma, California. He resigned from the Navy in 1850, and joined the Army with the rank of Colonel, then retired to Morristown, New Jersey in 1852. From 1857-1858, Revere toured Europe and served as a Military Consultant to various governments. At the beginning of the American Civil War, Revere was commissioned Colonel of the 7th New Jersey Infantry, and led that Regiment in the Peninsula Campaign, and the Seven Days Battle.

Revere was severely wounded at the battle of Second Bull Run in August, 1862. Then Promoted to Brigadier General in October, 1862. Revere’s military career ended when he was court martialed for his actions at the Battle of Chancellorsville and dismissed from the service. President Abraham Lincoln reinstated Revere, and accepted his resignation from the Army. A multitalented man, Revere was a well accomplished artist as well as an autobiographer, publishing his books, "A Tour of Duty in California" in 1849 and "Keel and Saddle" in 1872.

Highlights of this extensive Archive include:

1. An 1841 “Cover Letter” included is for his original Commission as Lieutenant in the Navy, Signed by U.S. Secretary of the Navy “J. K. Paulding”;

2. Revere’s artistic Hand-drawn Mexican War Ink Sketch of: "U.S. Ships Congress" and "Portsmouth", while commanding the town of Guaymas, Mexico", Signed with his Initials; 3. Revere’s Hand-drawn Ink Sketch of a “Man in a Turban”, also having on the back of a piece of a Letter Signed by Revere and two other Navy officers, dated: "U.S.S. Columbia, Macao Roads, June 4, 1839;

4. 1847 AZTEC CLUB - “Instituted By The Officers Of The U.S. Army In The City of Mexico. October 13, 1847.”, Large 19.5” x 14.75” Ornate Vellum Elected to Membership Certificate to “Paul Revere, son of Joseph Warren Revere, who served in Mexico as Lieutenant United States Navy”, City of New York, October 13th, 1894. Seal intact. Very Fine.

5. An 1858 Manuscript Letter from Italian Patriot Garibaldi, written in English in another hand, thanking Revere for payment and goods and "your other services to Italy";

6. A large Engraved 1860 Vellum Commission as Brigadier General of the “Morris Brigade”, Signed by New Jersey Governor Charles S. Olden;

7. August 31, 1861-Dated Civil War Vellum Appointment as Colonel of the 7th New Jersey Infantry Signed by New Jersey Adjutant General R. D. Stockton, Jr.;

8. 1878 Manuscript Letter to him from: "The Associated Pioneers of the Territorial Days of California", notifying Revere of his Election to Membership "by reason of your early and valuable services rendered in the Conquest of the then Mexican Territory of California in 1846 & 1847".

9. This Archive contains Papers and Documents of his son, “Paul Revere” (1856-1901), an Engraved Certificate of Membership in the “Washington Association of New Jersey”; 1896-Dated original Commission as a Member of the “Morris County Board of Elections” Signed by New Jersey Governor John W. Griggs, and there is so much, much more.

Also included are various miscellaneous Papers of other extended Members of the Revere Family; including Joseph Warren Revere’s son Augustus L. Revere, and General Revere's wife, Rosanna Duncan Lamb Revere (1819-1910), including her Engraved Pension Certificate as “Widow” of General Revere. There are Cabinet Card Photographs of various extended Revere family members, plus a bound Memo Book of “R. D. Revere” with his various real estate holdings, securities, mortgages, etc., being dated from the 1890's to 1910.

Also noted is a very scarce, Carte de Visite Photograph of Anna "Bamie" Roosevelt, the beloved Older Sister of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, taken by photographer Sarony.

This entire extended Paul Revere family associated lot is being offered and sold intact, “as is” in consideration of its importance remaining complete, and to keep this rare extensive historic Archive intact as a family record, in tribute to the legacy of one of America’s most cherished Revolutionary War hero’s of “The British are coming” fame, Silversmith and American Patriot Son of Liberty founder, Paul Revere, Jr. of Boston.
