William Bainbridge & Charles Stewart Signed War of 1812 Document Both Approving Supplies for the Frigate USS Constitution Both Naval Heroes Commanded in that War

WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE (1774-1833). American Naval Officer, During the War of 1812 he Commanded the 44-gun Frigate USS Consitution (Old Ironsides) from (9/15/1812 - 7/18/1813) and defeated HMS Java off the coast of Brazil on Dec. 29, 1812, for which he was Awarded a Congressional Gold Medal; in Command of the USS Philadelphia during the First Barbary War when she ran aground off of Tripoli in 1805, resulting in his Capture and Imprisonment for 19 months.

CHARLES STEWART, (1778-1869). Naval Officer who Succeeded Bainbridge as Second Commander of the USS Constitution (7/18/1813 - 7/16/1815) during the War of 1812 and Won notable Naval Victories over the HMS Cyane and HMS Levant, for which he also was Awarded a Congressional Gold Medal.

A remarkable War of 1812 American Navy Rarity, Manuscript Document 2 pages (one sheet both sides), measuring 7" x 4.25", Signed by both the First and Second Commanders of the historic Frigate USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) during the War of 1812, by William Bainbridge and Charles Stewart, Fine. Both Commanders sign approving payment of an invoice to “Greene & Vose” to the U.S. Navy Department for supplies provided in Dec. 1814 for the USS Constitution, the famous war ship that both men were Captains and commanded in War of 1812 notable victories, both being Awarded Congressional Gold Medals. The invoice is written on both sides, it reads, in full:

“United States Navy Dept For the “Constitution” 1814 Dec. 7. - To Greene & Vose. Dr.

To 10/12 doz White Wash Brushes 48 / $6.67 / (Dec) 12. - 6 pair Carpenter's Compasses. $9.42 --- Received paymt -- Ex - Saml C. Hijer

Signed on the back side by Greene & Vose, acknowledging receipt of payment in full at:

“Boston, January 6th, 1815. -- Received of Amos Binney Esq., United States Navy Agent at Boston -Nine 42/100 dollars in full for the within bill and signed duplicate receipts. (Signed) Greene & Vose”

Circular trace of the original wax seal show-through to both sides, irregular margins, small piece of an old stamp hinge near the reverse top edge and a small stamp hinge pull hole at far right, short fold split, fold near the reverse bottom reinforced paper tape far from any written portions. All appear worthy of minor conservation. Overall, fully readable being written in brown ink on laid period paper having slight age tone. A remarkable rarity and highlight for any collector or institution of United States War of 1812, Naval or Military Autographs, Medals and memorabilia.
