July 19, 1755-Dated French & Indian War Era Colonial America, Manuscript Document, being an Order to Pay the Salary due the Schoolmaster of the Town of Sandwich, Massachusetts, Choice Fine.
This original manuscript Colonial document, measuring 7.6” x 5.5” being an order from the Selectmen of the Town of Sandwich, Massachusetts to Silas Bourn, the Town Treasurer, to "pay to Silas Tupper our Present Schoolmaster the sum of Thirty and two pounds Lawful money which is his salary for keeping School the year past". Signed by two Selectmen of Sandwich, Samuel Tupper, (1692-1772), father of the schoolmaster Silas Tupper, (1727-1801), and Thomas Smith. Signed on the reverse by Silas Tupper, acknowledging receipt of 26 pounds on July 26th, 1755 and the remaining 6 pounds due him on March 1, 1756. Well written in rich brown ink on laid period paper. |
