Choice James Buchanan Bronze Indian Peace Medal Struck

(1857-Dated) James Buchanan Indian Peace Medal, Struck in Bronze. First Largest Size, Dies engraved by Salathiel Ellis and Joseph Willson, Julian IP-36. (with Post 1862 Fillmore-Pierce "Second" Reverse), Mint State

76 mm. Julian IP-36. Belden-50. This largest size virtually Mint State, James Buchanan Indian Peace Medal in Bronze has the popular “American Flag” design Second reverse. Overall medium chestnut-brown in color. The obverse die was engraved by Salathiel Ellis, and the reverse die is by Joseph Willson (a design also used on Pierce and Fillmore medals) produced after 1862. It displays High Relief obverse details, on a thick planchet with defect free rims.” This is the largest size Buchanan Indian Peace Medal. It shows a Native American Indian Chief and a American Army Officer in discussion, with an American Flag and Axe and farming Plow between them, as the reverse design. An opportunity for specialized United States Indian Peace Medal collectors.
