c. 1770 18th century American Colonial Period, Miniature Portrait of a Gentleman Hand-Painted on Bone, Fine.

Colonial era authentic Miniature Portrait of a Gentleman Hand-Painted on Bone. This portrait measures about 2-1/8” x 1-5/8” and features a well dressed Colonial era gentleman with his hair in a queue, wearing his high-collared brown suit and a fancy colorful embroidered shirt. The thin carved bone matrix has cracked into three pieces, which have been rejoined, the crack running above the eyebrows as shown. The background is a deeper even brown. Housed in a later period Civil War era thermoplastic case with a gold-gilt surround to the central portrait, with an intact working clasp.
