c. 1830 British single-shot, black powder, muzzle-loading percussion Militia rifle, maker engraved "HOLBORN, LONDON" and the back-action lock is maker engraved "W. PARKER", a popular Trade Gun for the Hudson Bay Company to provide to native Indians in Canada, Fine.
The octagon rifled barrel with patent breech measures 31 inches and the top flat of the barrel is maker engraved "HOLBORN, LONDON" and is stamped with (2) British Proof Marks. The back-action lock is maker engraved "W. PARKER". All brass furniture. The stock exhibits some sanding and refinishing, minor scratches, dings and some fine stress cracks but is nice and solid, with wooden ramrod. The overall length is 46 inches and is in good mechanical working order. This form of rifle is based on the British military "BAKER" flintlock rifle and retains some subtle similarities in the evolution. This pleasing example was most likely made for use by a private militia unit or also provided as a popular Trade Gun for the Hudson Bay Company to provide to native Indians in Canada, also as part of their annuities. Lot accompanied by a Letter from the MUSEUM OF THE FUR TRADE, Chadron, NE, Canada dated December 16, 2021. (See letter online.) |
