c. Late 1880’s, ULTRA-RARE 39-Star United States Of America Flag Design, that was Submitted to the U.S. Patent Office as a prototype, “NATIONAL BANNER” and “Patent Applied For” being sewn on the lower right corner, 23 inches wide x 24 1/2 inches high, Fine.
Historically significant, original 39-Star United States American Flag design that was submitted to the Patent Office as a prototype. It was an “Unofficial” American Flag for North Dakota (Nov. 2, 1889) on its entry into the Union. Written at its lower right corner: “National Banner” and “Patent Applied For” there is no tag or documentation with it from the Patent Office itself. The 39-Stars are printed on fine linen fabric as are the stripes. This neat square banner style design measures 23” wide x 24.5” high, being in fine condition. This flag some expected overall even age tone, nominal humidity stains and tiny moth holes. Patent Office prototype flags are very rare with only two or three such prototype flags previously recorded for sale and it is doubtful that you will find another to buy. An outstanding eye-catching uniquely designed historical flag that would look fantastic framed on display. A rare virtually square 39-Star American Flag.
Having 39-Stars in its field this Flag was issued at the time of North Dakota's Admission to the Union in 1889. As South Dakota was also admitted as the 40th State ON THE SAME DAY, this Flag became instantly obsolete! During this time period when new flags were commissioned to keep up with the new states, upon the 39th state to enter into the union, three other states were admitted as well. New Flags only came out every July 4th, therefore, there was No “Official” American Flag in 1889 made with 39-Stars. |
