Engraved Portrait of James Madison at age 82, measuring 6-3/4" x 10-1/2", engraved by Thomas B. Welch (1814-1874) after the original painting by James B. Longacre (1794-1869), “taken from life at Montpelier Va. July 1833”. A vivid bold Facsimile signature of James Madison at bottom. Longacre went to Montpelier in July 1833 to paint this portrait for Longacre's & James Herring's publication in "National Portrait Gallery". Madison was reluctant to sit for the portrait, but after being urged to do so by President Andrew Jackson and Nicholas Trist, so he finally agreed. Slight tone at bottom right. This is engraved after the Last Life Portrait of James Madison known. |
