Peter Gosling was a hand-painter for Coalport porcelain, known for his still-life works, particularly of fruit, and landscape scenes. Gosling was active during the 20th century, and his work can be found on a variety of Coalport items, including vases, plates, and commemorative urns. Coalport was a prominent English manufacturer of fine porcelain and bone china, founded by John Rose in Shropshire in 1795. The company was known for its innovative techniques and lavish hand-decorated wares, which made it a favorite among royalty and collectors for over two centuries. In 1851, Coalport created an elaborate table service for Queen Victoria, who presented it as a gift to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. Although the brand is now part of the Wedgwood group, its pieces remain highly sought-after. This piece is exceptional for display being of 20th century manufacture which is bright clean and defect free with excellency eye appeal.
Facing financial difficulties in the 1920s, the company was purchased by the Staffordshire-based Cauldon Potteries, and production moved to the new location in 1926. The Coalport brand eventually became part of the Wedgwood group in 1967. |
