JULY 23, 1861, 6 A.M-Dated, Civil War Confederate Newspaper Special Printed Broadside: "GLORIOUS VICTORY!" regarding the First Battle of Bull Run, Printed by the GEORGIA CITIZEN EXTRA- TUESDAY, JULY 23, 1861. 6 A. M.", Framed, Choice Very Fine or better.

This rare historic early Civil War Confederate Broadside “EXTRA” measures 22” x 5” (by sight) professionally matted and framed to fully a long 24" tall x 5.85" wide. The masthead and headline reads: "GEORGIA CITIZEN - EXTRA. - TUESDAY, JULY 23, 1861. 6 A. M.". It indicates this to be a special separate early morning printing, reporting on events just after their occurrence. It is printed in black on light tan wove period paper, having excellent overall eye appeal with bold, black printed text. This original, "Extra" Broadside of the Georgia Citizen newspaper of Tuesday, July 23, 1861, announces in part:

"GLORIOUS VICTORY!" (regarding the First Battle of Bull Run, reporting) "The Federalists 80,000 routed by 40,000 Confederates. Great Slaughter on Both Sides! Four Batteries Taken and Eight Rifle Cannon. The Enemy is in full retreat to Washington and the greatest Consternation Prevailing in Washington." There is a NORTHERN REPORT; “Only 200 Fire Zouaves left from the slaughter -- 69th and other N. York Regiment suffered.” A telegraph message from Manassas, ... a 5th Dispatch reports the 71st New York lost half their men and “Lowest Estimate of Killed and Wounded 4,000 To 5,000” and much more news and battle details continuing throughout the entire Broadside.

This Broadside EXTRA was printed on tan paper as a separate single sheet having no print on the reverse. This historic 1861 dated Confederate Broadside is from the very early stage of the Civil War. Viewed under special UV Plexigas in a modern period looking frame. Completely original, of museum display quality ready to hang.

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF

AMBASSADOR J. WILLIAM MIDDENDORF II

Despite the paper's reports, the forces engaged were much more even, with 35,000 Union troops against 32,500 Confederates. Initial casualties were actually fairly balanced, but Northern soldiers panicked and many were captured trying to flee in the war's first full battle.

This Battle showed the folly of Northern expectations that the Civil War would be brief and one-sided, but also gave birth to the false hope in the South that the Union would soon abandon its attempt to recapture the Seceded states.
