“British Official Account of the Capture of the Java” the Naval Battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Java

June 17, 1813-Dated War of 1812, Newspaper titled, “The Statesman”, New York, reporting the Naval Battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Java, action taking place on December 30, 1812, Choice Very Fine.

This War of 1812 Newspaper measures about 13.25” x 20.5”, 4 pages, the two sheets are separated along the spine, short 2” split at centerfold, otherwise having extremely well printed sharp text and designs. Over a full page of War action contemporary news reports from across America and the British Fleet from Buffalo, NY and Canada with a continued “Biography of Comodore Decatur.” Starting on the second page and continuing to the third, are multiple columns reporting the “British Official Account of the Capture of the Java.” The historic naval battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Java, took place on December 30, 1812 off the coast of Brazil. This report written by First Lieutenant Ducie Chads, who relays, in part:

"... having a great part of our crew killed and wounded, our bowsprit and three masts gone, several guns useless, we should not be justified in wasting the lives of more of those remaining."

This historic newspaper provides a contemporary look at what battle with “Old Ironsides” entailed. Just a few columns further, we see a notice for a meeting for the General Committee of Arrangements regarding "celebrating the 37th anniversary of the American Independence". Showing how the struggles of freedom impacted parts of the population, is a notice directly below this advertising, "A Mulatto wench 25 years old" for sale. There are many other notices and advertisements; Hudson River Steam-Boats; and Stage lines are of interest, also including a police report regarding stolen silver, a notice for the sale of items made at the state prison, advertising for the “Bank of America” and medicines including “mercury” administered by a Dr. Hive.
