1864 Union Naval Department General Order No. 38 “Death from Scalds and Inhalation ... Officer Dismissed”
June 27, 1864-Dated, Civil War Period, Union Navy Department General Order No. 38, Signed in print by Gideon Welles, Choice Mint.

This General Order No. 38 is Signed in print by Gideon Welles, as Secretary of the Navy, measuring 8.5” x 5.5”. Regarding a “... coroner’s jury recently assembled in New York to inquire into the causes of the destruction of human life on board the United States steamer Chenango ... these men met their death from scalds and inhalation of steam on board ...” It concludes that, “In consequence of the verdict in this case, 2d Assistant Engineer S. Wilkins Cragg, the officer who inspected the boilers ... is dismissed from the service ... cease to be considered as an officer of the navy...”
