Rare George Washington Inaugural Button “Eagle and Sun” Major Type Ex: COBB Collection |

(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button, “Eagle and Sun (Above)” Major Type, Embossed Design on Back Variant, Cobb-18, Albert WI-13A, DeWitt-Unlisted; Baker-1009 var., Ex: Cobb Collection, Copper, with Original Shank, Very Fine. 34 mm. This important George Washington Inaugural Button is attractive and very rare with this example later identified as being a major “Variant” variety. It was Harold Cobb's own collection button as imaged on his famous photographic illustration plate as “Cobb-18”. Extremely Rare as this “Variant” as Cobb himself had only confirmed the locations of five “Eagle and Sun” examples as of 1968, none others having been noted with this embossed reverse side “Variant.”The “Eagle and SUN” in very rare as compared to nearly 70 examples Cobb identified of the Cobb-17 “Eagle and STAR” buttons, and nearly 80 of the “GW” in Oval types. It is well detailed with its original shank fully intact and perfectly straight. The face side was cleaned likely well over a century ago and has retoned and mellowed to a brassy-gold in color, whereas the reverse side was never touched and remains its natural golden-chestnut. Complete with Cobb’s original handwritten collection identification tag where its matching rectangular outline on the reverse is apparent to the naked eye Overall, worn from use with virtually all details remain sharp and clear. There are several surface scratches located on its face, mostly at upper right, as shown. Cobb’s original description listing for this collection number did not reflect that this is a major “Variant”, with virtually the entire central design and edge detail clearly seen “embossed” through to the back. This detail was also not mentioned in the Stack’s January 2003 Cobb Collection Auction offering of this exact same button, offered as Lot 1358. There it was described as brass, but the appearance seems much more like copper, and that is how Cobb had described it. There are “21 Indents” at the border surround, as given for Cobb-18. For specialized George Washington Inaugural Button collectors and rarity specialists alike, this may prove a unique opportunity.
