November 14, 1792-Dated Federal Period, Newspaper titled, “The New Jersey Journal”, Elizabethtown, New Jersey, with President George Washington’s Annual Message to Congress and 1792 Half Disme / United States establishing is first Mint content, Published by Shepard Kollock, 4 pages, Complete, Choice Very Fine.
This historic New Jersey issued newspaper is printed on a blue paper and is among the very rarest state titles of the 18th Century. A highly important content issue, as it has a full front page printing of President George Washington’s Annual Message to Congress held on Tuesday, November 6, 1792. It comprises most of the front page, ending on page two, with his block printed signature: “GEO. WASHINGTON.”
This issue is important in Numismatic History, as President Washington writes on the establishment of the new United States Mint, and that a small number of “half dimes” (Disme) has already been coined dated 1792 (Martha Washington’s silverware was melted and used to strike these 1792 Half Dismes!). In execution of the authority given by the Legislature measures have been taken for engaging some artists from abroad to aid in the establishment of our mint. Others have been employed at home (in America). Provision has been made of the requisite buildings, and these are now putting into proper condition for the purposes of the (mints) establishment. There has also been a small beginning in the coinage of silver half dimes, the want of small coins in circulation, calling the first attention to them. Well printed on blue period paper, measuring about 16” x 10” small folio, disbound, with just a small transparent corner tape repair and a light crease on the front page, with slight scattered tone and somewhat rough margin edges (piece still attached) affecting no text. The regulation of foreign coins in correspondency with the principles of our national coinage, as being essential to their due operation and to order in our money concerns, will, I doubt not, be resumed and completed. With much more extensive content, plus standard period news and advertisements.
