JOHN QUINCY ADAMS. Sixth President of the United States (1825-29), James Monroe's Secretary of State, largely devising the Monroe Doctrine and in later years one of the earliest Anti-Slavery Leaders.

April 1, 1825-Dated, Very Rare “Re-use” by Two United States Presidents Partly-Printed Document on Vellum being Headed: “JAMES MONROE, President” in Printed Text, then having his name Crossed Out and replaced, being authentically Signed, “J. Q. Adams” as President, 1 page, measuring 13.25” x 9.25”, Washington (DC), Very Fine.

This original 1825 Land Grant is made to John Norton, assignee of Robert W. Norris of Howard County, purchased at Franklin, Missouri. This very rare use printed Document the was fully originally printed with “JAMES MONROE, President...” (Adams predecessor) at top. Monroe’s name was then “Crossed Out” and “John Quincy Adams” was lightly penned above.

Also Signed by Commissioner of the General Land Office, George Graham. Overall, well printed with typical light folds, manuscript portions fully readable though somewhat light. The White Paper and Wax Embossed Official Seal is fully intact at the lower left, with a nice clear deeper brown “J. Q. Adams” signature at the lower right. Provenance: From our EAHA Auction of January 2014 where it realized $1,995. Currently housed in a nice custom luxe binder covered in black cloth and imprinted in gilt-gold reading: “John Quincy Adams Land Grant 1825”. An extremely rare “Dual” Presidential Use Document.
