c. 1887, Engraved Portrait of Paul Revere, Artist Signed, “S. Hollyer” (Samuel Hollyer 1826-1919), after St. Memin 1804, Extremely Fine.
An excellent Engraved Portrait of Paul Revere, Jr. measuring 4.5” x 6.25”. Image shows an older stately Paul Revere in profile facing left with his large facsimile of his signature below. The bottom portion has printed in small text: "Eng. by Hollyer after St. Memin 1804". Research tells us this engraving was published c. 1887. Light tone to the far right and bottom margin edges from prior display. At bottom right is the clear, easily readable handwritten pencil artist’s signature, "S. Hollyer". Samuel Hollyer (1826-1919) was an engraver who worked both in his native England and the United States. His obituary in the New York Times describes his as "one of the last, if not the very last, of the old school of line engravers." A rare, artist signed example of this handsome engraving. |
