HENRY LEE (1756-1818). Also known as Light-Horse Harry Lee or Henry Lee III, was an officer in the Continental Army, a Representative from Virginia to the Confederation Congress (1786-1788) and the U.S. House of Representatives (1799-1801); a Member of the House of Delegates (1789-1791), the Governor of Virginia (1791-1794); gave George Washington's eulogy in Congress where he said famously: "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.".

August 17, 1792-Dated Federal Period, Large Vellum Land Grant Partially-Printed Document boldly Signed, "Henry Lee", Very Fine. Nicely printed and fully manuscript completed on Vellum, granting 330 acres located on Sinking Creek, Salt Peter Cave, Washington Co., Virginia to Robert Preston, with red wax and paper Embossed Seal applied lower left corner, and boldly signed "Henry Lee" in brown ink at lower right corner being huge, measuring about 3.75” long.

The Robert Preston house at Walnut Grove Plantation, constructed circa 1790, is the oldest frame house in Washington County, Virginia. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A Department of Historic Resources highway marker along Lee Highway documents "William Clark, of Lewis and Clark, breakfasted at the home of Preston's son John at Walnut Grove in 1809." A Lewis and Clark Portrait Sign on Lee Highway officially documents the property's Lewis and Clark connection. The property is featured as the first stop on the Virginia Lewis and Clark Legacy Trail. A very pleasing historic document with the Robert Preston connection, fully margined and attractive with a massive signature of Henry Lee.
Henry Lee, also known as Light-Horse Harry Lee or Henry Lee III, was an officer in the Continental and U.S. armies, a representative from Virginia to the Confederation Congress (1786-1788) and the U.S. House of Representatives (1799-1801), a member of the House of Delegates (1789-1791), the Governor of Virginia (1791-1794), and the master of Stratford Hall.

Born in Prince William County and educated at Princeton, he was the father of eight children who survived to adulthood, including Henry Lee IV, Charles Carter Lee, and Robert E. Lee. A gifted cavalryman, Lee distinguished himself in the American Revolution (1775-1783), fighting under Generals George Washington and Nathanael Greene. After the war, Lee played an active role in state and national politics, but his ambitions were undermined by disastrous land deals and financial mismanagement.

He served time in debtor's prison, and in 1812, an encounter with an anti-Federalist mob in Baltimore left him disfigured and ailing. After traveling abroad to escape his creditors, Lee died in Georgia in 1818. One of his proudest moments came when he gave George Washington's eulogy to Congress, where he said famously: "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.".
