Historical Book titled, “THE NAVAL MONUMENT, containing official and other accounts of all the battles fought between the navies of the United States and Great Britain during the late war;...”, by Abel Bowen (1790-1850), “Revised and Corrected ... to the Year 1836.”, Published by G(eorge) Clark, 1840-Dated, Boston, Very Good to Fine.

A very rarely encountered early American illustrated book, dedicated to United States Naval History, including the War of 1812 and its Naval operations; the Naval War with Algeria, 1815; and general United States Navy History of the period. Multiple black and white engraved plates of various major Naval Battles. An original First Edition is complete but lacking 3 plates including the frontis and 2 of the 24 total interior engravings, and lacking pages 155-158, and 323 to 326. Includes index at the conclusion with specifics to the War of 1812 through 1815. 8vo, contemporary calf with gilt border to hard covers, gilt spine lettering and decoration, frontispiece engraving lacking and 24 engravings within the text with two lacking. Account of the United States Navy in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, first published in 1816. Toning, scattered spotting and foxing, with front cover attached via leather covers worn with its spine heavily rubbed from use. “The Naval Monument, containing official and other accounts of all the battles fought between the navies of the United States and Great Britain during the late war; and an account of the war with Algiers, with twenty-five engravings. To which is annexed a naval register of the United States. Revised and Corrected... to the Year 1836. Published by George Clark, Boston.” Housed within a Custom Deep blue fabric and leather hard cover with a Gilt Embossed Title “NAVAL MONUMENT” on its spine.
In the year 1900 a magnificent “Army and Navy Monument” was constructed in Boston, 1840/1900. [Soldiers and Sailors Monument designed by Martin Milmore, and erected in memory of Massachusetts soldiers and sailors who died in the American Civil War].
