1857-Dated, Publisher's Brown Cloth Covered Pocket Folding Map, “Colton's Railroad & Township Map of the State of New York with Parts of Adjoining States & Canada,” Very Fine.
This large, highly detailed Hand-Colored Folding Map with County borders measures a full 26” x 29” when open. This Map is attached to the publisher's brown cloth binding which was blind-tooled, and lettered in gold gilt, titled: “Township Map of the State of New-York - Published by J.H. Colton.” When the Map is folded within the covers this Booklet measures a mere 5.75” x 3.5”. The Map is separated along many folds suggesting some restoration before display, yet what a colorful vivid display it will make!
J. H. Colton (1800-1893) founded a mapmaking dynasty that began in New York in the early 1830s. Colton produced his maps with steel engravings, resulting in good quality. His firm became known for its highly detailed railroad maps, folding pocket maps, and atlases, which additionally featured elaborate decorative borders. In 1855 the firm produced the first of many editions of the Colton's Atlas of the World. |
