c. 1880, British Naval Officer’s Parallel Ruler, Choice Extremely Fine.

This light golden-brown wooden Maritime Parallel Ruler measures about 6” long and 1 3/8” wide when closed. It is marked with a British War Department arrow and has “A.G. Thornton, LTD / Manchester” stamped near the beveled edge at one end. Founded in 1880 at 109 Deansgate, Manchester by Alexander George Thornton, the firm grew to become one of the largest manufacturers of drawing instruments and slide rules in Britain. Rulers such as these are used to plot direction on a nautical chart. They are essentially, two straight-edges, hinged so that they maintain the same angle. By alternating the moving edge, and securely holding down the non-moving edge, you can move the rulers about the chart while still maintaining the same angle. This nice original example is made of wood with brass hinges.
