c. 1776 Revolutionary War Era, American Patriotic First Edition Printed Songsheet titled, “RULE NEW-ENGLAND: A NEW PATRIOTIC SONG,” Written by Thomas PAINE, Esqr. A.M., - The Music Composed by F. Schaffer - Boston - Printed and Sold at P.A. Von Hagen’s Piano Forte Ware-House No. 4 Old Massachusetts Bank, head of The Mall,... & etc. (Other locations), Fine.

Patriotic American Printed Songsheet by Thomas Paine titled: “RULE NEW-ENGLAND: A NEW PATRIOTIC SONG,” with lyrics such as... “Never Never Never Shall Be Slaves”, 2 pages, measuring 12.75” x 19”. No doubt a takeoff of “RULE BRITANNIA,” this one sided Music Sheet contains 8 verses of song with lyrics by Thomas Paine, set to music by F. Schaffer, arranged over two face pages. Scattered water stain tone, the heavy period laid paper double sheet is worn from use, its vertical centerfold has early archival reinforcement that is not obtrusive and paper reinforcement along the far left reverse margin edge. Chorus, was meant to be accompanied by “Flute or for the Guitar or Clarinet.” An intriguing find, extending the legacy of the famed patriot and author of “Common Sense.” “Rule, New England: A New Patriotic Song” is a lesser-known work by Thomas Paine. A version appears in his collection of works titled, "The American Crisis," specifically in the Sixth edition, published in 1779. Dramatic lyrics abound in all the verses, such as:

“What arm a sinking State can Save, from faction’s Pyre, or Anarch’s grave; pale Liberty with haggard eyes, looks round the realm and thus replies, Rule New-England, Rule, New-England, Rules and Saves Columbians never never never Shall be Slaves...”

The blank reverse page has two Handwritten bars of music in contemporary brown ink, yet having no additional lyrics. The opposite blank reverse page has a notation with contemporary initials as being given as a gift.

This is an exceptionally rare original First Edition printing of this highly Patriotic Sheet Music. This cataloger has only located a later printing, housed in the Library of Congress titled: “Rule New England : a new patriotic song written by Thomas Paine Esqr. and sung at the Anniversary of the Massachusetts Charitable Fire Society, 1802”. (Mallet, F. (Francis), 1750-1834.) This later copy has significantly different text and format style to its face page. That example was: “Songs with Piano, Created / Published in Boston : Printed and sold by Mallet, & Graupner, at their Conservatorio or Musical Academy, 1802”. SEE: Library of Congress Control Number: 2015562170.

Ex: EAHA, Auction December 13, 2003 Lot 266 where it was offered as the first we have seen and we have seen no other example of this rare Patriotic Music and Lyrics by Thomas Paine located to date.
"Rule, New England: A New Patriotic Song" is a poem written by Thomas Paine, a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War and a key intellectual influence on the American Revolution. Paine is best known for his influential pamphlets, such as "Common Sense" and "The American Crisis," which played significant roles in rallying colonists to the cause of independence from Britain.

"Rule, New England" was written during the Revolutionary War period, likely around the same time as his other works. The poem is an expression of patriotism and a call to arms for the American colonies, particularly New England, to rise up against British rule and fight for their independence.

Paine's writings were characterized by their straightforward language and powerful rhetoric, which appealed to a broad audience and helped to galvanize support for the Revolutionary cause. His works were widely circulated and had a significant impact on public opinion in the colonies.

While "Rule, New England" may not be as well-known as some of Paine's other writings, it is indicative of his commitment to the cause of American independence and his ability to inspire others to join the fight for liberty and self-government.
