December 1782 Revolutionary War Charleston, South Carolina Partially-Printed Parole Form for a British Prisoner

December 23, 1782-Dated Revolutionary War, Partially-Printed Document, at Charleston South Carolina, a Parole Form Signed by Peter Merselis a New Jersey British Loyalist who came to South Carolina with General Cornwallis' British Army, Uniface, Fully Signed and Executed, Choice Extremely Fine.

The first we have encountered in 50 years, this very rare Revolutionary War “Prisoner” Parole Form, is dated at Charleston, South Carolina, December 23, 1782, being dated just 9 days after the British Army Evacuated the City. This exceedingly rare form is boldly Signed, “Peter Merselis” a British Loyalist from New Jersey who accompanied Cornwallis' Army in the British Invasion of South Carolina. Also, Signed by Phil. Prioleau, as “Witness” and again as “Secretary” at the conclusion. Philip Prioleau was born in Charleston, SC in 1755 and died there at age 35, in 1790. This well printed, very clean Document has 1 page, measures 7-5/8" x 4-1/2" being fully completed and signed in rich brown ink, having one small fold hole at bottom in “CERTIFY” having full margins and choice eye appeal. This rare Prisoner Parole Document reads, in full:

"I DO hereby acknowledge myself to be a Prisoner to the State of South-Carolina, until the Legislature of the said State shall determine on my Case; And I do promise and engage, in the mean Time, not to do, or cause any Thing to be done, prejudicial or injurious to the said State, the United States, or their Allies. --- Witness my Hand at Charlestown, this twenty third Day of December - 1782. - (Signed) Peter Merselis. -- Witness, Phil Prioleau. --- I DO HEREBY CERTIFY, That the above is a true Copy from the Original, Signed by Peter Merselis. --- (Signed) Phil. Prioleau, Sec'y".
