(STEUBEN, Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf, von). His Historic Military Manual titled: “Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States... The Twelth Edition to which is Added, The Manual Exercise & Evolutions of the Cavalry as Practised in the Late American Army.”, (Bennington), Vermont: by Anthony Haswell, 1794, “Thomas Sammons” (1762-1838) of New York, Signed Copy, Very Good.

Originall published in 1779, Recognized as a landmark publication of the American Revolution, Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States by Friedrich Wilhelm Steuben remained the official manual of the United States Army, as well as state militias, until the beginning of the War of 1812. This Twelfth Edition, to which is added The Manual Exercise & Evolutions Of the Cavalry As practiced in the late American Army, Printed in Vermont by Anthony Haswell, in the year 1794.

This scarce Vermont edition (Only 9 Copies Located) has 94 pages complete, does not include the 8 folding plates listed, measures 6.5” x 4” (16 mo.), with its Contemporary Calf-Leather covered birch boards, with its ending blank leaf and 6 pages of text. A well used copy with expected wear to the outer covers, page corners worn with some creases, light age, and an added pastedown on the inside back cover of GENERAL ORDERS, dated July 20, 1798 issued by D. Van Horne, Adjt. General New York Militia. Prior owner’s “Thos. Sammon’s Book 1797” redated thru 1804 on the front blank page which is torn at the top and bottom outer corners. A very popular, serious well used contemporary military manual for obvious reasons.

The Owner who’s name is Signed in ink is “Thomas Sammons” (1762-1838), who was an important New York figure. Born in Shamenkop, Ulster County, New York, Sammons served as an Officer in the Revolutionary War. He was a Delegate to the New York Constitutional Convention of 1801; He served as a Lt. Captain and Major in the NY Militia; Elected to the 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th United States Congress; Sammons enlisted in the New York Line of the Continental Army in 1780; he moved with his father’s family to Marbletown, NY when the British destroyed their home; he returned after the Revolutionary War; Married Mary Wood on December 16, 1792 at Caughnawaugh; and Died on the Sammons’ Homestead, in Montgomery County, NY and is buried in the Simeon Sammons Cemetery.

This is a scarce early Vermont printing of this famous and much reprinted military manual from the time of the American Revolution. The text is highlighted by the attractive folding plates, which illustrate various formations of troops and maneuvers. McCorison locates only nine copies of this Vermont printed edition. Reference: Sabin 91424; Evans 27959; McCorison 310. Provenance: De-accessioned from a Major Virginia History Museum, with its display plaque.
