January 16, 1776-Dated Revolutionary War Period Manuscript Pay Order from the Committee of the Pay Table For Connecticut, Ordering Payment to Capt. James Clark of the 3rd Connecticut Regiment "for Arms & Cloathing lost by Company under his Command at Bunker Hill & in Kennebeck River & for Riding Express", Signed by Committee Members Ezekiel Williams and Founding Father Oliver Ellsworth, the future Chief Justice of the United States, Choice Very Fine or better.
Rarely encountered, highly important Battle of Bunker Hill related Manuscript Document, 1 page written on both sides, measuring 8.25" x 4.5", dated January 16, 1776, Hartford, CT, from the “Committee of the Pay Table” for Connecticut, ordering the Treasurer of Connecticut to pay 55 pounds, 17 shillings to Captain James Clark, 6th Company, 3rd Connecticut Regiment for his Company's losses of arms and clothing at Bunker Hill and in the Kennebeck River (the March to Quebec under Arnold). This Order is Signed by two members of the Committee, Ezekiel Williams (1729-1818) Sheriff of Hartford County, 1767-1789 and Member of the Committee of the Pay Table beginning in 1775; and also by Founding Father OLIVER ELLSWORTH (1745-1807); a Delegate to the Continental Congress from CT, 1777-1783; a Member of the Constitutional Convention in 1787; served in the U.S. Senate, 1789-1796; becoming the Third Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, 1796-1800 Appointed by President George Washington. This well written and easily readable in bold brown ink on laid period paper, the Document reads, in part:
"Sir, --- Pay Capt. James Clark, Paymaster. 6th Comp., 3d Conn't Regt. - Fifty five pounds Seventeen Shilling - for Arms & Cloathing lost by Company under his Command at Bunker Hill & in Kenebeck River - & for Riding Express & for Expence of Sickness as p. acct. & charge the Colony. --- Jany 16, 1776 --- (Boldly Signed) Ez Williams / O. Ellsworth - Commtee". Receipt on the reverse reads: “Hartford 16 January 1776 -- Rec.d of Treasurer Fifty five pound Seventeen Shillings being the Contents -- (Signed) James Clark”.
