c. 1760 American Colonial Era French & Indian War Period, Large 9” tall American Wooden Stave and banded Tavern style Tankard, with signed letter of provenance, Fine.
A very large Tankard measuring 9” tall x 7.5” base x 6.25 Top opening, complete but its pine staves are loose needing some readjustment, yet overall clean with its original wood handle intact. An interesting provenance accompanies this Colonial Tankard, which is typed on University of Virginia letterhead, and reading, in full:
“January 2010 -- To Whom it May Concern: -- I attest these two American Tavern Tankards, circa 1760, excavated after a tavern fire at Cherry Valley, New York. -- Cherry Valley was settled i 1740 - the first settlement on the Allegheny Plateau and the settlement furthest west from the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys. -- During the Revolutionary War the Mohawk Indians conducted the so-called Cherry Valley Massacre (1778). -- (Signed) William C. McDonald, Professor”.
Note: Only one (of the two Tankards mentioned) is offered in this lot, as photographed. |
