Joseph Warren Revere Extensive Family Archive Relating to Revolutionary War Patriot Paul Revere Jr’s Grandson and to His Great Grandson “Paul Revere” and Family Relatives

JOSEPH WARREN REVERE (1812-1880) and PAUL REVERE (Son of Joseph Warren Revere 1856-1901),. President of the “Revere Copper Company” in 1811 upon Paul Revere’s retirement; Officer who served in both the United States Navy and Army; served with distinction as a Navy Lieutenant during the Mexican War and as a Brigadier General during the American Civil War; he was the direct Grandson of PAUL REVERE JR., Silversmith, Engraver, and famous Boston “Sons of Liberty” Revolutionary War Patriot who made a historic ride the night of April 18th, 1775 to warn that... The British Are Coming.

Extensive Family Archive containing original diverse Revere Family and related extended relations, containing about 100 Documents, Letters, Photographs, and more, Very Fine. Much is related to the legacy of Joseph Warren Revere, a Civil War Union General who was the Grandson of Paul Revere, Jr. and Joseph Warren Revere’s son named Paul Revere. Plus, additional items of Revere extended family related material dating from the 1830's to the early 1900's.

Joseph Warren Revere entered the United States Navy as a Midshipman in 1828. During the American conquest of Mexican California (1846-1847), as a U.S. Naval Officer Joseph Revere led the Marines and Sailors that raised the US Flag in San Francisco and Sonoma, California. He resigned from the Navy in 1850, and joined the U.S. Army with the rank of Colonel, then in 1852 he retired to Morristown, New Jersey. From 1857-1858, Joseph Revere toured Europe where he served as a Military Consultant to various foreign governments. At the beginning of the American Civil War, Joseph Revere was Commissioned Colonel of the 7th New Jersey Infantry, and led that Regiment in the Peninsula Campaign, and the Seven Days Battle.

Joseph Revere was severely wounded at the Battle of Second Bull Run in August, 1862. He was Promoted to Brigadier General in October, 1862. Revere’s military career ended when he was court-martialed for his actions at the Battle of Chancellorsville, and dismissed from the service. However, President Abraham Lincoln himself reinstated Joseph Revere, and accepted his resignation from the Army. An intelligent, multitalented man, Revere was also a well accomplished Artist as well as an Autobiographer, publishing his two books, "A Tour of Duty in California" (1849) and "Keel and Saddle" (1872) regarding his service in both the Navy and Army.

A Few Highlights of this extensive Archive include:

1. An 1841 “Cover Letter” included is for Joseph Revere’s original Commission as Lieutenant in the Navy, Signed by U.S. Secretary of the Navy “J. K. Paulding”;

2. Joseph Revere’s artistic, Hand-drawn Mexican War Ink Sketch of the: "U.S. Ships Congress" and "Portsmouth", while commanding the town of Guaymas, Mexico, Signed with his Initials;

3. Joseph Revere’s Hand-Drawn Ink Sketch of a “Man in a Turban”, also having on the back of a piece of a Letter he Signed with two other Navy officers, dated: "USS Columbia, Macao Roads, June 4, 1839;

4. 1847 AZTEC CLUB - “Instituted By The Officers Of The U.S. Army In The City of Mexico. October 13, 1847.”, a large 19.5” x 14.75” Ornate Vellum Membership Certificate to “Paul Revere” (Son of Joseph Warren Revere), who Served in Mexico as a in the Lieutenant United States Navy”, City of New York, dated October 13th, 1894 with its official Seal intact, Very Fine;

5. An 1858 Manuscript Letter from Italian Patriot Garibaldi, written in English but in another hand, thanking Revere for payment and goods and "your other services to Italy";

6. Engraved 1860-Dated Vellum Commission as “Brigadier General” of the “Morris Brigade” Signed by New Jersey Governor Charles S. Olden;

7. August 31, 1861-Dated Civil War Vellum Appointment as Colonel of the 7th New Jersey Infantry, Signed by New Jersey Adjutant General R. D. Stockton, Jr.;

8. 1878 Manuscript Letter to him from: "The Associated Pioneers of the Territorial Days of California," notifying Revere of his Election to his Membership, "by reason of your early and valuable services rendered in the Conquest of the then Mexican Territory of California in 1846 & 1847".

9. This Archive contains various Papers and Documents of his son, “Paul Revere” (1856-1901), including an Engraved Membership Certificate in the “Washington Association of New Jersey”; and his 1896-Dated Commission as a Member of the “Morris County Board of Elections,” Signed by New Jersey Governor John W. Griggs;

10. There is so much, more, some items suggesting further research.

Also, various miscellaneous Papers of other extended Members of the Revere Family; including Joseph Warren Revere’s son, Augustus L. Revere, and General Joseph Warren Revere's wife, Rosanna Duncan Lamb Revere (1819-1910), which includes her Engraved Pension Certificate as “Widow” of General Joseph Warren Revere. There are some Cabinet Card Photographs of various likely extended Revere family members, plus a bound Memo Book of “R. D. Revere” with listings of his various real estate holdings, investment securities, mortgages, etc., most being dated from 1890 to 1910.

This entire extended Paul Revere related family association Archive is offered and sold intact, “as is” in consideration of its importance to remain complete. This unique extensive Archive is a tribute to the legacy of one of America’s most cherished Revolutionary War Hero’s, who was at the very start of the American Revolution renowned for “The British are Coming!” fame, the legacy of American Patriot, “Sons of Liberty” founding member, Paul Revere, Jr..
