HENRY MIDDLETON (1717-1784). A Founding Father of the United States from South Carolina, President of the Continental Congress from South Carolina (1774-1774), Delegate to the Continental Congress (1774-1774), Signer on a rare South Carolina Currency issue in 1775, being the only available “Collectable” example of Henry Middleton’s autograph.

“Henry Middleton” Signed Colonial Currency, South Carolina. April 29, 1775-Dated, Twenty Pounds, Handwritten Date, Promissory Note, Certified by PMG as Genuine, Pen Cancelled, PMG graded Fine-12. Fr. SC-97.1. An important South Carolina Colonial & Revolutionary War paper money emission from the earliest start of American Revolutionary War Era which took place just Ten Days prior, on April 19, 1775 at Lexington Green in Massachusetts, which started with “the Shot Heard Round the World”. This historic paper money issue is also the earliest paper currency of the Revolutionary War period emitted from the original Thirteen Colonies.

Listed in Eric Newman’s reference book, THE EARLY PAPER MONEY OF AMERICA, this issue is comprised of only two denominations, 20 and 50. It is considered the only “Collectable” form for collectors to acquire any example of Henry Middleton’s autograph, typically only available when on this rare 1775 South Carolina currency issue.

This entire emission was subsequently only issued for less than two months, between April 18th and May 25rd of 1775. Ornately engraved, this rare 20 South Carolina Currency “Promissory Note of Citizens” has a larger size format that measures about 4.5” x 6.25” and is of a unique style. This historic note is very clearly and boldly Signed, “Henry Middleton” in deep dark brown ink with his huge signature measuring about 2.75” long having the typical brown ink manuscript cancel across his signature. There are no other detractions noted on the PMG holder. We note some minor tiny splits along centerfold and trivial pinholes when held to a strong light, and typical outer margin wear from circulation. Superbly engraved printed decorations enhance the reverse side. Its design is exceptionally ornate, showing a display of a Crowned Rose, Thistle flanking Fleur-de-lis, and a Harp, printed on lightly circulated clean period laid paper, and has pleasing eye appeal. The designs on both sides remain clear and sharp with the printed text fully readable but for the obverse cancels. A period notation on the reverse upper right reads, “1000 --- Thk You”. All four signatures and the date being written in bold rich brown ink including: the most important signature “Henry Middleton” is at top, then “Th.(omas) Lynch,” “M.(iles) Brewton,” and “B.(enjamin) Huger”.

This note represents the only affordable and “Collectable” examples of Henry Middleton’s signature that is rarely available to autograph collectors, as so stated and illustrated in Charles Hamilton’s classic reference book on Autographs. Other examples we previously offered included a 50 note which also had a similar long dark manuscript ink cancel line running directly through his name “Henry Middleton” which sold our EAHA Auction of June 3, 2016, Lot 2112, stating “Manuscript Canceled” PCGS graded EF-40 which then sold for $4,800; in our EAHA Auction August 27, 2022, a 20 PCGS graded Very Fine-25 without cancel sold for $6,875. A wonderful opportunity for anyone seeking to purchase the autographs of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence! This note is worthy of a premium per its April 29th, 1775 hand-written early Revolutionary War date.
These prominent signers’ backgrounds and fates are integral to the history of the American Revolution.

Henry Middleton served briefly as the President of the Continental Congress but struggled with the concept of Independence.

Benjamin Huger was killed by friendly fire in 1779 while serving in the war.

Miles Brewton (along with his family) was lost at sea months after he signed this note, while traveling to Philadelphia to attend the Continental Congress.

Thomas Lynch, Sr. (1727-1776) was a successful planter from Charleston, South Carolina, important in having participated in many “key” events that shaped the American Revolution, including the 1765 Stamp Act Congress, 1774 First Continental Congress, and 1775 Second Continental Congress playing a key role in helping convince Congress to select George Washington as Commander-In-Chief of the American Army. Suffering a stroke that left him paralyzed, his son, Thomas Lynch, Jr. took his place and ultimately signed the Declaration of Independence representing South Carolina in 1776.
