1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp, EP-60, HB-7, S-4, Reed-AC05SA. Five Cents, Ayer's Cathartic Pills, Short Arrows, perhaps rating as Finest Known, Choice Extremely Fine or better.

Fred Reed rates this piece as an Rarity-7 (11 to 15 known). We believe the number known to been much closer to the eleven than the fifteen. Considerably scarcer than most collectors realize, Reed's auction records, which include “re-appearances” of the same piece, show 31 offerings in 124 years, (as compared to 133 for the Three Cent). This is a very nice example, with a bold colorful bright fresh brown Thomas Jefferson stamp, centered just a bit to the right. The mica is unbroken and very clear and the high-grade rich chestnut case retains traces of underlying luster within the sharp reverse legends. Certainly better than Ford and the Frederick Mayer collection examples, perhaps rating as Finest Known.
