1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp, EP-46, HB-129, S-95, Reed-JG03. Three Cents. J. GAULT, Plain Frame, Very Fine.

Rated as a Rarity-7 (11-15 known), according to Fred Reed. This 1862 Patent Civil War Emergency Currency for use as small change was produced for only three months in 1862. There was only one example of this EP-46 number that was offered in the Stack’s John J. Ford Collection Sale in June 2004. This current example has a well centered red George Washington 1861 issue 3 cent stamp having some very slight age tone. The mica is clear with smooth surfaces, unbroken with only some faint circulation. This series was allowed to circulate with U.S. Government postage stamps as emergency use as small change during the Civil War. A scarce J. GAULT denomination.
