1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp, EP-4, HB-27, S-13a, Reed-AS01SM. One Cent, Ayer's Sarsaparilla, Small “AYER'S” Variety, Plain Frame, Very Fine or better.
Note: This is only the Fourth EP-4 we have offered in over four decades, so this number seems to be erroneously rated as Rarity-4, according to Fred Reed. It is more rare than Fred Reed suggests, seemingly a Rarity-7 (11 to 15 Known).
This current specimen is better that the single specimen offered in the John J. Ford, Jr. collection graded Very Fine, that stamp faded. Our example has nice centering, a rich blue Ben Franklin stamp, having just a couple of tiny tone specks near the top of Benjamin Franklin’s head. The mica is unbroken, having a couple faint internal laminations at the rim edge. The case is a natural deep chestnut in color, and is sharp and clean, virtually free of detractions or circulation wear. In our opinion, this is an underrated and higher rarity. We sold an example in our EAHA Auction of April 22, 2006, Lot 740, graded Choice About Uncirculated, for $2,125. This very rare 1 Small “AYER’S” variety is just the Fourth example of Friedberg EP-4 we have offered, and is certainly missing from most Encased Postage Stamp collections. |
