February 15, 1933-Dated (at one time celebrated as Washington's Birthdate), Elegant Porcelain Tray Hand-Painted by artist Stella Evans. Inspired by a relatively rare engraving entitled "The Home of Washington," this original painting depicts George Washington and his family with the Marquis de Lafayette, on the long porch of Mount Vernon overlooking the Potomac River.
This Tray Painting was inspired by a scarce engraving titled, "The Home of Washington." This original painting depicts George Washington and his family together with the Marquis de Lafayette, on the long porch of Mount Vernon overlooking the Potomac River. The scene on which this tray was based was painted by Thomas Prichard Rossiter (American, 1818-1871) and Louis Rmy Mignot (American, 1831-1870), engraved by Thomas Oldham Barlow (English, 1824-1889) and published in 1863 by John McClure (American, c. 1893-1929). Copies of the original engraving by Oldham are currently in Mount Vernon's collection and also at the Library of Congress. No other copies of this Painted Tray are known to exist.
Signed and Dated painted at lower right, this decoratively shaped Tray measures about 14.5” x 18.5” with lovely details. Some artistic liberties were taken by the artist Stella Evans, painter of this tray, making this a unique piece of George Washington related Americana. Washington and Lafayette are shown standing by a pillar on Mount Vernon's grand piazza, with Lafayette holding a copy of a newspaper, identifiable as the “Pennsylvania Gazette” in the original engraving, but missing in this tray painting depiction. Martha Washington appears to be having a cup of Tea (not sewing) with her daughter-in-law Eleanor Calvert Custis Stuart, (who is not shown reading a letter but) pouring Tea. Martha's granddaughter, Nellie Parke Custis Lewis, is seen resting her head on Martha's lap, just as shown in the original version. Seen at left, in the yard, is her brother George Washington Parke Custis, shown with an African-American nannie (Slave), playing with a dog (not shown lighting a toy cannon as in the engraving), while two other dogs watch. In the background, people are seen in the gazebo, looking out onto a view of the Potomac River, and a worker tends to sheep. This tray has an antique sturdy brass holder for wall display. There is some unobtrusive minor paint flaking at the upper right edge, one small chip in the porcelain at bottom. Overall, a unique vibrant Painted depiction of his historic scene at Mount Vernon.
