c. 1796 Federal Period, Stipple Copper-Plate Engraving titled, "G. Washington. N en Virginie anne 1733. Commandant en Chef des Armes et Prsident du Congres d'Amrique." Proof Impression, after Franois Bonneville, by Louis Charles Ruotte, Paris, Crisp Near Mint.
Highly attractive Oval Portrait Engraving of General George Washington at center, measuring about 4.25” x 3.25”, the overall plate size is about 6.75” x 4.5”. The central plate impression is deeply sunk into a larger sheet with an overall size of 10” x 13” with fully wide margins. It appears excellent for framing and display. This print saw three issued versions, this being the final third version, with the address changed to “Paris rue St. Jacques No. 195” and with the corrected spelling “Congres d”Amerique.” Published in Washington’s lifetime in Philippe Qunard, Portraits des Personages clbres de la Rvolution, vol. 1 (Paris 1796). The central image shows a Bust Portrait of General Washington facing left, wearing his military uniform on a sheet with original deckled edges, as made. This was made for sale to George Washington’s throngs of admirers in France as many would desire his image.
