JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1767-1848). 6th President of the United States (1825-1829); Negotiated with the United Kingdom over America's northern border with Canada; with Spain the annexation of Florida; one of the earliest Anti-Slavery Leaders; authored the “Monroe Doctrine” thus one of the greatest Diplomats and Secretaries of State in American history.

April 1, 1825-Dated, Partially-Printed Document having a very rare REUSE involving Two United States Presidents, completed on Vellum, headed: “JAMES MONROE, President” in its Printed Text, having Monroe’s name Crossed Out and subsequently replaced and authentically Signed, “J. Q. Adams” as President, 1 page, measuring 13.25” x 9.25”, Washington (DC), Very Fine.

This original 1825 Land Grant is made to John Norton, assignee of Robert W. Norris of Howard County, purchased at Franklin, Missouri. This very rare use Document the was fully originally printed with “JAMES MONROE, President...” (Adams predecessor) at top. Monroe’s name was then “Crossed Out” and “John Quincy Adams” was lightly penned above.

Also Signed by Commissioner of the General Land Office, George Graham. Overall, well printed with typical light folds, manuscript portions fully readable though somewhat light. The White Paper and Wax Embossed Official Seal is fully intact at the lower left, with a nice clear deeper brown “J. Q. Adams” signature at the lower right. Provenance: From our EAHA Auction of January 2014 where it realized $1,995. Currently housed in a nice custom luxe binder covered in black cloth and imprinted in gilt-gold reading: “John Quincy Adams Land Grant 1825”. An extremely rare “Dual” Presidential Use Document of which we have not encountered another.
