"DeWitt Clinton" Clipped Signature Together With His Original "DeWitt Clinton" Copper-Plate Engraved Bookplate

DEWITT CLINTON (1769-1828), served in the U.S. Senate from New York, 1802-1803; Mayor of New York City on 3 occasions, 1803-1807, 1808-1810 and 1811-1815; Governor of New York, 1817-1823 and 1825-1828, and was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal.

"DeWitt Clinton" Clipped Signature, on laid paper, measuring about 3.5" x 1.5” with his personal Copper-Plate engraved Bookplate Crest Engraved by the famous engraver, Peter R. Maverick, as noted by his name engraved in the Imprint, "P.R. Maverick, Sculpr.", Very Fine. The Bookplate measures 3.5" x 2.5". Both items are laid down onto a blue cardstock measuring 7-1/2" x 5-3/8", which also has some manuscript biographical information of DeWitt Clinton at bottom. Both items grade Very Fine.

The engraver of this bookplate was Peter Rushton Maverick (1755-1811), a New York City engraver and patriarch of a family of New York Engravers, which included his son, Peter Maverick, who also became a well-known printmaker and engraver.
