c. 1740, Hand-Colored Engraved Copper-Plate Map title, “CARTA GEOGRAFICA DELL AMERICA SETTENTRIONALE” by G. Albrizzi, Venice, Framed, Choice Extremely Fine.An impressive large map, engraved in Venice, in 1740 by Giambattista Albrizzi (1698-1777), based upon the earlier 1708 Map by De L’Ise. Tthis historic Map measures 19.25” x 14.5”, profesionally modern matted and framed to 23.5” x 19.75” and viewed through special UV plexiglas. Beautifully printed on fine quality laid period paper with a colorful vignette at the upper left depicting Native Americans and the God of the Sea with Trident in hand. It is nicely Hand-colored in strong watercolors and shows a very detailed depiction of early America. Titled, “Carta Geografica Dell America Settentrionale”.
The cartouche vignette shows Neptune being pulled to shore by Sea Serpents while riding on a clam shell, and includes the Great Lakes and a rendering of Baja California. The Mississippi River Valley and the Rio Grande are still very inaccurate, however there are lots of details including many Indian Tribes and early settlements west of the Mississippi. There are also many settlements depicted in Florida and along the Gulf as well as many settlements along the California Coast. The Pacific Northwest and west of the Upper Mississippi is left blank, unlike earlier maps, because of the lack of knowledge of the area. Single vertical fold in center with mounting remnants on verso. Overall, this Map is in excellent condition (a pencil notation in the lower right corner with the date 1740) with an inset within the bottom mat with the printed date “1740”. A gorgeous map in a brand new modern frame adds additional choice eye appeal and value. Tthis lovely Map is ready to hand on display.
