March 2, 1861-Dated Large Albumen Photograph, captioned "WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS AT VALLEY FORGE, DURING THE MEMORABLE WINTER OF 1777-78", with imprint "PHOTOGRAPHED BY LEWIS HORNING, PHOENIXVILLE, PA., MARCH 2, 1861." Fine
Earliest Known Photograph of Washington's Headquarters at Valley Forge - taken by photographer Lewis Horning on March 2, 1861. At this time, the building was an occupied private residence. A large albumen print, measuring 7.5" x 5.75", mounted to a heavy photo mount board measuring 11.5" x 10.5", on which the caption is printed in black. A great image, taken while snow covered the ground as far as the eye can see, giving an idea of the Wintry conditions under which Washington's Army suffered during their horrific Winter at Camp Valley Forge. The photograph itself is Very Fine, with a few small scattered light spots. An original 2c blue Internal Revenue “Proprietary” Stamp manuscript canceled at center, affixed to the back. The mount has significant chipping and paper loss at left and at the corners, tone and edge staining, as shown. An important historical photo record of “WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS AT VALLEY FORGE”. |
