c. 1706-1708, Original Map of North & South America (translated) titled, “America or the New World, first discovered and sailed by C. Columbus in the year 1492,” with California presented as an Island, Leyden, Published by Pieter Van Der Aa, Extremely Fine.

California is presented as an Island. This vivid attractive original Map originates from, “accurate accounts of memorable sea and land voyages, to the East and West Indies and other regions, first discovering by different nations, mostly Kings of companies send there; since 1492-1499.” It measuring about 9.4” x 6.7” with the Map image being 8.7” x 6.1” printed on quality period handmade laid paper. This particular Map is from part of this book: “The famous sea-voyage of Christoffel Columbus; First done by him in 1492, for the Catholic Majesties, as sea Admiral, for the discovery of the West-Indian landscapes.” Published by Dutch map artist Pieter Van Der Aa (1659-1733). Original light folds with some creases at right. Blank reverse with some prior reinforcement. A very bold impression and visually stunning with insets at the upper left and lower left corner areas. Image of Columbus and two Cherubs with period navigation and other instruments nicely presented within the upper vignette. A highly visual Map with great eye appeal. Currently housed and protected within a custom luxe binder, covered in black cloth and imprinted in gilt-gold. Provenance: From our EAHA Auction of April 2017 where it realized $720.
