March 7, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles Printed Navy Department General Order No. 8, Regarding Alcohol Onboard Union Navy Ships, Choice Crisp Mint.

Printed General Order, 1 page, measuring 8.5” x 5.5” titled “General Order No. 8” by Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles, who orders all liquor to be removed from Navy vessels. This Order comes after three men were found, “in the possession of spirituous liquors on board that vessel, and also in a state of intoxication.” From this date forward, no liquor of such matter will be allowed on the ship for reasons other than “medical stores.” This official Document signifies a large change in the way the Navy ships were run and operated... good-bye to your Rum rations.
