1836 Gobrecht Silver Dollar, Judd-60 Original, Die Alignment III, with “C Gobrecht” Name on Base, Plain Edge, NGC graded About Uncirculated Details.

The 1836 Gobrecht Silver Dollar is an iconic and important coin in American numismatics, representing both artistic excellence and historical significance in the development of United States coinage. It is named after its designer, Christian Gobrecht, who was the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint at the time. This scarce genuine 1836 Gobrecht Silver Dollar is stated by NGC to be Plugged and Whizzed thus given the “Details” connotation, Allignment Variety III, which indicates when the dies are turned on their horizontal axis (coin rotation) per how the reverse side Eagle flies, and the legend stops are not level to one another. The 1836 Gobrecht Silver Dollar was struck in limited quantities as patterns (trial pieces) rather than for circulation. The total mintage is believed to be around 1,300 to 1,500 pieces across both varieties.

These rare Gobrecht Silver Dollars were struck in Proof format, meaning they were specially polished and struck multiple times to produce sharp, detailed designs. Overall, this coin has been circulated with even wear, thus graded “AU” by NGC. It is pleasing silver-grey color and smooth appearing surfaces, having professional repair to a small hole plugged above the head at the rim, now virtually invisible. The conservation work is very well accomplished and hard to notice.

Recently, in their November 14, 2023 Auction, Stack's Bowers offered Lot 3079, having a similar grade and appearace described as: “1836 Gobrecht Silver Dollar. Name on Base. Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65. Rarity-1. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I. Proof. AU Details -- Plugged (NGC), which sold for $10,800. We hereby offer a most affordable and pleasing looking NGC AU certified example, available to fill this important void in most Gobrecht Dollar collections.
