February 1, 1864-Dated Civil War Period, Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles Navy Department Printed General Order No. 29, Alcoholic Beverages Banned Aboard Union Navy Ships, Choice Crisp Mint.

Union Navy Department Printed General Order measuring 8.5” x 5.5”, 1 page, issued by Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles, in printed text. This Order to prevent alcoholic beverages on board Navy ships, reading in part: “Wines, ales, and other liquors not prohibited by law on board vessels of the Navy”. This along with a series of other orders, clearly made it obvious that the government would no longer tolerate alcohol of any type on or near any military vessel.
