Decorative Colored Hand-Engraved Powder Horn Showing a British Sailor In Love & Sending Letters to His Sweetheart

War of 1812 Era (Appearance), Hand-Engraved Decorative Powder Horn, With Sailor and his Sweetheart, Choice Very Fine.

This Hand-Engraved War of 1812 Era Powder Horn measures about 12”, with it’s Hand-Engraved stopper adding about 2.25”, its carving depicting a “Mermaid”. There are numerous excellent quality scrimshawed engravings, many being Hand-colored. They include; a Jack Tar (British sailor) standing on the dock next to a bollard with a liqueur bottle and fancy glass on its top (a post on a ship or quay used principally for securing the ship to the pier or quay), shown holding a flagpole with a large colorful British Flag; above the Flag is another engraving of a decorative large Powder Horn; at his left is smaller Fort flying an American Flag with a five-pointed Star engraved in the field and also colored, a vine design breaks the images into various sections, one such being the fancy scrip Initials “J L L”, no doubt his Wife or Sweetheart, who is also depicted standing and pointing to the sky with a Letter held in her right hand, Two “Lovebirds” both with Envelopes in their beaks are delivering Love Letters. A Church with a Rooster Weathervane at top is shown to the left and behind his Lover, and a fancy powder horn. The Stopper is of a truly custom design, showing a “Mermaid” with her classic fish tail atop the plug. This remarkable decorative Powder Horn shows only light wear as it was carefully stored. There are scattered minor wormholes and tiny chips where the original nails held the large end wood plug and the fragile engraved bone stopper was once cracked and repaired. Overall, our photography is worth more than this cataloger’s words.
