1856 "Merchants' and Planters' Prices Current" Mobile, AL.
October 11, 1856, "Merchants' and Planters' Prices Current," Published by Forsyth and Harris, Mobile, Alabama, Choice Fine.
Two-page manuscript measures 11" x 9", and includes a mailing leaf and manuscript letter; the newsletter provided a monthly update as to the prevailing market price of numerous goods, including cotton, that were exported to both the Eastern Seaboard and European ports of call. On the reverse side is a one-page manuscript letter written by G. Westfeldt & Bro. on Oct. 11, 1856 to Smith & Co., Providence, Rhode Island. It reads in part: "We had the pleasure... with shipping documents of 50 Bales of Cotton for your account by the Baque 'Pilguin" ...our market closed firmly yesterday with sales... of 600 bales." The original transmittal leaf has a three cent stamp and has a circular "MOBILE" postmark. Light soiling, minor edge splits along folds, and two small holes resulting from the missing wax seal.
