Sampler Made by "Mary E. Flower" & Signed With Thread
c. 1870, Sampler, Signed "Mary E. Flower," Prayer Verse and Text, Choice Extremely Fine.
This is an original, larger size, nicely detailed sampler which is framed under glass to 25" x 22" in size. Featuring a central composition of cursive alphabet letters, upper and lower block alphabet letters, numerals, geometric patterns, a flower pot and a homestead, and a short prayer verse:

"Lord permit thy gracious name to stand / At the first effort of a loving hand / As her fingers over the canvass [sic] move / Engage her tender heart to seek thy love."

This early Sampler is Signed in pink and golden-brown thread, "Mary E. Flower". The entire composition is embroidered with an interlocking leaf and floral design. A nice range of colored threads are evident, expertly stitched against a plain ochre colored background, which has been left blank. A beautiful example reflective of the masterful, artistic maker.
