c. 1796 Historic General George Washington Stipple Proof Print Engraved and Published During His Lifetime at Paris

c. 1796 Federal Period, Stipple Copper-Plate Engraving titled, "G. Washington. N en Virginie anne 1733. Commandant en Chef des Armes et Prsident du Congres d’Amrique." Proof Impression, after Franois Bonneville, by Louis Charles Ruotte, Paris, Choice Crisp Near Mint.

c. 1796 (undated), a highly attractive handsome Oval Portrait Engraving of George Washington at center, measuring about 4.25” x 3.25”, the plate size is about 6.75” x 4.5” and that central impression plate is sharply and deeply sunk into a larger sheet with an overall size of 10” x 13” that has full wide margins and appears excellent for framing and display. This print saw three issued versions, this being the final third version, with the address changed to “Paris rue St. Jacques No. 195” and with the corrected spelling “Congres d”Amerique.” Published in Washington’s lifetime in Philippe Qunard, Portraits des Personages clbres de la Rvolution, vol. 1 (Paris 1796). The central image shows a Bust Portrait of General Washington facing left, wearing his military uniform. Sheet has its original deckled edges, as made. This was made for George Washington’s popular throngs of admirers in France, of which many would desire his image.
