"Free" Black Continental Army Soldier Azariah Freeman

September 29, 1789-Dated Revolutionary War Related, Partly-Printed Document, by Oliver Wolcott Jr. as Comptroller of Connecticut, made out to Azariah Freeman, Framed, Choice Crisp New.

This impressive, original Partly-Printed Document acknowledges receipt from Connecticut Comptroller, Oliver Wolcott in the amount of "Three shillings and ten pence Lawful Money, in 1 Certificate; being the balance due on 1 State Note lodged in the Treasury..., for Azariah Freeman, Hartford." This boldly printed and completed form measures 2.75" x 7.25" (by sight) being nicely matted and framed to an overall size of 6.75" x 11". These official receipts were given for interest paid on money due soldiers who had served in the Revolutionary War Continental Army. "Freeman" was a name carried by Free Blacks, many of them in Connecticut.
