1866 Book on the Post-Assassination Time Period of President Abraham Lincoln

1866-Dated, 1ST Edition Hardcover Book, "OBSEQUIES OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK", under the auspices of the Common Council by David T. Valentine, Clerk of the Common Council, published by Edmund Jones & Company of New York, Very Fine.

This publication was authorized by the Common Council of the City of New York in 1865 that a chronological account of the events following the death of President Lincoln be created. It was prepared by David T. Valentine, Clerk of Common Council. This book has 254 pages, measures 7.5" x 10.5" and is Highly Illustrated with excellent Steel Engravings, plus other full page Sepia Plates. The frontis portrait of Lincoln is lacking, one text leaf lacking (page 113/114), with a printed replacement of that leaf laid in its chronological place. The top margin has been cut on page115/116. All that is missing is the theme title of "LINCOLN OBSEQUIES." Otherwise, the text is totally complete, with nothing affected or missing. The spine has a nicely rebuilt cloth spine strip placed upon the binding of the book. Aside from the usual shelfwear, the exterior is very attractive in appearance; especially the lovely rich gilt title and pictorial emblem. The hinges are tight and strong, with contents clean and distraction free.

There is a former gift inscription. The mystery is to WHOM as someone took the time to cut out the name, however, a signature of "compliments of W. H. Gedney of New York" is present on the front blank fly leaf page, and dated "Aug 17, 1867". His name is listed in print as part of the Authorization Special Committe on the Funeral Obsequies of the late President!
