1775 Boston Almanac with Patriotic Engraving & Text by Nathanael Low Published in Boston Just Prior to Rev War!

1775-Dated (1774), "An Astronomical Diary; Or, Almanack for the Year of Christian Era 1775" by Nathanael Low, Published in Boston, With a Title Page Engraving Titled: "The Virtuous Patriot at the Hour of Death," Fine.

This important historic Boston Almanac would have been in Massachusetts homes by April, 1775 when, on April 19, 1775 hostilities broke out in Lexington and Concord. This rare Revolutionary War Period Almanac measures about 4.25" x 6.75" and contains 24 pages (complete). Printed and sold by John Kneeland in Boston, this historical Almanac is of particular interest because of the fantastic Woodblock Engraved Illustration on the front title page. Even more interesting is the highly patriotic 4 page dissertation by Nathanael Low against British Tyranny titled: "Address to the Inhabitants of Boston," dated September 5, 1774.

Nathanael Low, like printer Nathaniel Ames, helped fan the flames of discontent which led to the American Revolution. This almanac provides ample evidence of flame fanning. The title page woodcut portrays the dramatic and prophetically timely "Virtuous PATRIOT at the Hour of Death." Below the illustration we read: "If Prayers and Tears th' Patriot's Life could save, None but usurping Villain's Death would have."

In the "Address to the Inhabitants of Boston," Low decries the Port Bill and "a British armament parading in your streets and harbour..." He continues: "My dear brethren, the destiny of America seems to be suspended on the present controversy; and it is on your fidelity, firmness and good conduct that a happy issue of it in a great measure depends."

Also includes on page a woodcut of an Eclipse due in the year 1775, plus a printed Poem titled: "On LIBERTY". This rare, and historically important American Almanac is self bound in paper wraps as issued. It is contemporarily hand sewn at the spine with part of the original thread present, a newer thread was sewn in later. Expected age tone, scattered stains throughout and some edge wear from actual use. Two very small and one slightly larger holes appear on the front leaf in the woodcut illustration affecting the head of one person. Overall this 1775 Almanac is well preserved, being a fully complete example of this exceedingly rare 18th century American Almanac with a fantastic illustrated cover and printed in Boston. A historically important Revolutionary War Political Publication and Boston Almanac. Drake, ALMANACS, 3241; Evans 13384.
