Exceedingly Rare 1762 Georgia Ten Shillings "Ship" Note

Province of Georgia. 1762. Ten Shillings. "Ship" Vignette. Period Newspaper backed. PCGS graded Very Fine-20.

Fr. GA-41b. This remarkable rare 1762 Georgia currency series of engraved vignette notes was printed on a very fragile period paper. It is the very first example of the Ten Shillings denomination "Ship" vignette we have offered. All five signatures are present with wear in light to medium brown ink with some impairment from the heavy vertical centerfold. The paper is not restored, rather it was reinforced on the blank reverse with a small section of a contemporary newspaper. The PCGS holder states "Apparent splits and minor edge damage," as the centerfold is intact but splitting and heavily worn. The engraved face is evenly worn, the text and various designs basically clear and overall, appears very distinctive. The "Ship" vignette at lower right is sharply printed and distinct. This issue is vastly rarer than the popular 1776 "Seal" type notes and is very underrated for rarity and as a major type note. Rarely offered or seen in any quality. An essential major type and great rarity on this historic Georgia Colonial series. Lacking in most all collections, this is an important opportunity for serious Georgia and Colonial Currency collectors.
