Extremely Rare July 3, 1776 New Hampshire Five Dollars

Colony of New Hampshire. July 3, 1776. Five Dollars. Apparent edge tear at left. PCGS graded Very Fine-20.

Fr. NH-175. A great New Hampshire currency rarity dated on July 3, 1776 just one day prior to the Declaration of Independence Signing at Philadelphia. This important Revolutionary War note is attractive and well printed in deep black. Boldly signed in brown ink by Josiah Moulton and John Smith. Our database indicates that we have never offered another of this exceedingly rare July 3, 1776 issue of any denomination. This pleasing circulated note is the very first on this entire issue. Other than for some trivial scattered pinholes and a short edge tear at mid-left margin, everything remains clearly readable and attractive for its PCGS grade. The only comparable auction record we find is that which is listed in the Newman reference, THE EARLY PAPER MONEY OF AMERICA, which mentions a raw (non-certified) $2 note graded Very Fine having sold for $10,350 in October, 2006.
